Environmental and Regulations

Brookfield Energia Renovável has developed a methodology to calculate and market carbon credits generated by its SHPPs, and it was the first hydro electric generator company to market carbon credits in Brazil. Brookfield Energia Renovável’s contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases, via the Kyoto Protocol clean development mechanism (CDM) projects, is estimated at 2.4 million tons of carbon between 2008 and 2012.

The company abides by a strong internal regulatory framework, comprised of professionals with extensive experience in the power sector, coming from some of the largest and most influential companies and organizations in the industry. Brookfield Energia Renovável takes an active part in all meetings that are essential to the power sector, and also participates in the most important professional associations of the sector, with seats on the governing boards of APINE (Brazilian Association of Independent Power Producers), APMPE (Brazilian Association of Small and Medium Electric Power Producers) and ABRACEEL (Brazilian Association of Electric Power Marketing Agents).

The company fully complies with local environmental regulation, having high standards for health and work safety, and operational excellence. It also has an active social group that promotes the development of sustainable projects alongside local communities.
